United Arab Emirates operator eyes LTE Broadcast launch this year. Alcatel-Lucent has won a contract to extend U.A.E.-based Etisalat's LTE network coverage. The agreement is part of the operator's plan to cover 99% of the country's populated areas by 2015. In addition, the deal will see Etisalat deploy evolved Multimedia Broadcast Service (eMBMS) in 2014, the technology underpinning LTE Broadcast services.
AT&T has announced the first group of vendors chosen to help it migrate to software-defined networking (SDN) and implement network functions virtualisation (NFV). Ericsson, self-styled network orchestration specialist Tail-F Systems, and cloud networking firm Metaswitch have been selected to provide insight on design and deployment. AT&T is also working on a virtual evolved packet core (vEPC) in partnership with Affirmed Networks, while the aforementioned Ericsson is also providing its consulting expertise on the subject of integration and transformation services. Further selections will be made throughout 2014.
To celebrate the first anniversary of its LTE network, T-Mobile US has announced a major network upgrade programme. The Operator plans to upgrade its 2G and EDGE networks to LTE, meaning some of its customers will experience faster speeds for the first time, while others living in areas already covered by LTE will get a more reliable service. The operator plans to carry out 50% of the work this year and complete the upgrade by the middle of 2015. T-Mobile also plans to begin rolling out LTE in the 700-MHz spectrum it agreed to buy from Verizon for $2.4 billion in January.
